Ukuqonda's Education/Learning Philosophy

Dedicated to the promotion of excellence in mathematics.

ENGAGEMENT WITH LEARNERS
Ukuqonda, as its name (which means “to understand”) implies, focuses strongly on learning with conceptual understanding and the development of key concepts, rather than a narrow focus on preparing learners for tests and examinations.
In practical terms this means engagement of learners in meaningful tasks which provide them with opportunities to make sense of subject content and provides space for own thinking.
We actively pursue opportunities and ways of developing responsibility for own learning, self-reliance and initiative in learners.

ENGAGEMENT WITH TEACHERS
Our experiences over many years, in engaging with teachers in schools, have made us deeply aware of how difficult it is to change established teaching practices which are often not conducive to sense making, conceptual understanding and the development of self-reliance. Established teachers are mostly strongly set in their ways and impacting on them requires intensive engagements over many years. The return on investment in in-service training of teachers is typically small. Possible impacts of investments in in-service training of established teachers are often eroded by better teachers being promoted to non-teaching positions and teachers leaving the school system.

We engage learners in meaningful tasks which provide them with opportunities to make sense of subject content and provides space for own thinking.
